GAO report criticizes lack of CMS national standards for accrediting imaging suppliers

A Government Accountability Office (GAO) study of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) accreditation process for advanced diagnostic imaging suppliers found that CMS did not establish adequate minimum national standards.

Current oversight is limited and focused on ensuring claims were paid to accredited suppliers, while no oversight framework exists to monitor the performance of accrediting organizations, according to the GAO.
