Harris wins VA contract for HIPAA compliance
Communications company Harris has been awarded an eight-month subcontract to support the Veterans Health Administration’s migration to updated standards under HIPAA.

As the primary subcontractor on the engineering services network team which was awarded a potential $10.9 million contract, Harris will provide software development services, including requirements definition and documentation, and software design, test and deployment.

HIPAA’s administrative simplification provisions set U.S. standards for certain electronic healthcare transactions, such as claims processing, remittance advice, eligibility and status determinations.  The provisions also address the security and privacy of health data, according to Harris, of Melbourne, Fla.

By Jan. 1, 2012, covered entities—including health plans, healthcare clearinghouses and certain healthcare providers—must upgrade to HIPAA X12 version 5010 and NCPDP version D.0 to simplify procedures, create uniformity of transactions, streamline reimbursements and combat fraud and abuse.
