Mayo Clinic takes top spot in hospital rankings

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., claimed the No. 1 spot this year in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual hospital honor roll ranking.

Nearly 5,000 medical centers were included in the rankings, which evaluated 16 medical specialties. Factors such as death rates, patient safety and hospital reputation were considered. Hospitals with high scores in at least six specialties made the honor roll, something achieved by 17 hospitals in this year’s rankings.

Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston came in at No. 2. Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, which had a 21-year run at No. 1 snapped in 2012, fell to No. 3.
