Robert E. O’Mara, MD, former chair of radiology and chief of nuclear medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), died at his home in Tucson, Ariz., on April 26, according to an announcement this week from URMC.

O’Mara graduated from Albany College of Medicine in 1959, and had residency training at both Rochester General Hospital and St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City, followed by a fellowship in nuclear medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

O’Mara came to URMC in 1975 and was chief of nuclear medicine through 1988. He assumed the role of department chair from 1987 to 1991. O’Mara refocused his attention on nuclear medicine until 1999, when he relocated to Tucson and practiced part-time at the University of Arizona until 2006. During his 25 years at URMC, he led ground-braking research in bone scanning, according to the medical center.
