Advanced visualization company Barco Healthcare has become the first vendor to gain FDA approval for its breast tomosynthesis display system, which it plans to market commercially beginning in the third quarter of 2011.

The Mammo Tomosynthesis 5MP displays multi-modality images to render 3D mammography views, the Kortrijk, Belgium-based company said. The system comes bundled with pixel refreshing technology and automatic calibration of luminance and contrast, Barco stated.

Barco showcased the system at the 2011 meeting of the Society of Breast Imaging in San Antonio May 18 to 20.
