Illinois makes public mortality, safety rates of state hospitals on web site
A web site launched by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) in November 2009 aims to provide better transparency to state residence by making public healthcare data including infectious disease rates, mortality and patient safety, as well as quality and process of care measures.

Recently, the web site underwent upgrades including the addition of supplementary data based on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality indications, surgical improvement project measures, patient satisfaction rates and services including inpatient and outpatient conditions.

According to IDPH, the public may also compare the quality and safety of various hospital facilities across the state using the site. Additionally, residence can now view information pertaining to inpatient and outpatient hospital data including volume of patient cases, costs and rates of adverse events.

“To help Illinoisans make better decisions about their choice of hospital or healthcare provider, they need information about the quality of care offered by these facilities …. [T]he web site allows consumers to find average costs for specific medical procedures, nurse staffing levels at hospitals and general quality of care information,” said Damon T. Arnold, director of IDPH.

The web site also includes information from 2009 Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection, emergency medical systems for children and hospital emergency department volume.
