The imaging iodine contrast shortage is delaying procedures and causing rationing at hospitals. impact is it having on hospitals and the tough decisions that are being made to triage patients to determine if they will get a contrast CT scan or an interventional or surgical procedure requiring contrast. This could be especially helpful when timely clinical decisions relative to the use of a contrast agent need to be made.

With the earth’s warmest March on record in 175 years barely in the rearview mirror, a team of radiology experts says medical imaging must step up its sustainability efforts.

Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models can evaluate cardiovascular risk in routine chest CT scans without contrast, according to new research published in Nature Communications.[1] In fact, the authors noted, the AI approach may be more effective at identifying issues than relying on guidance from radiologists. Representative non-contrast CT slices for two patients (left), with super-imposed segmentations (right). One artificial intelligence (AI) model was used to segment a cardiac mask.

Two advanced algorithms—one for CAC scores and another for segmenting cardiac chamber volumes—outperformed radiologists when assessing low-dose chest CT scans.

Given the subjective nature of diagnosing concussions, it can be difficult to make the call on whether a patient needs imaging, but many doctors err on the side of caution.

MRI safety zone warning sign at entrance into an MRI imaging room at Northwestern Central DuPage Hospital.

The course’s release follows numerous reported MRI accidents that have occurred in recent years, many that resulted in severe injury and some that were even fatal.

In the past, when initial CT scans didn’t uncover anything suspicious, patients were often referred for a lumbar puncture to check for blood in their spinal fluid. But those recommendations have started to change.

In this cohort, experts found that just 34% of surgeries were performed on symptomatic patients, which shifted their focus to other potential modes of detection.

Joao Cavalcante, MD, director, cardiac MRI and structural CT labs, Minneapolis Heart Institute, discusses the use of cardiac CT imaging to plan and guide structural heart procedures.

To date, research pertaining to reactive lymphadenopathy has focused mostly on patients with cancer who are routinely staged and monitored via PET/CT or in women undergoing breast cancer screening and/or imaging with mammography and ultrasound.

For specificity—a metric that has been somewhat unpredictable in breast MRI and CEM—the scoring system performed significantly better than BI-RADS.
