Study: Siemens retains top ranking in ultrasound market share
Total U.S. medical ultrasound revenues reached $1.23 billion in 2003, which included a gain in market share for Siemens Medical Solutions Ultrasound Division in the echocardiography market to 31.4 percent, according to the Klein Biomedical Consultants (KBC) annual report.

KBC, a strategic marketing firm, ranked Siemens Ultrasound as the No. 1 ultrasound company in the United States for the fourth year in a row, followed by Philips Medical Systems at No. 2 .GE Healthcare placed third.

In the KBC report of 2003 sales, Siemens retained the top spot in the radiology ultrasound market in the U.S., with a total of 46.3 percent market share in dollars. Additionally, the report shows unit shipments of the company's flagship Acuson Sequoia ultrasound platform increased 12.3 percent in 2003, making it the No. 1 selling ultrasound system in the United States for the seventh year in a row.

In the radiology high-performance ultrasound system segment, Siemens led all companies with 54 percent of unit share, and 56 percent in dollar share, both showing a big increase in sales of the Sonoline Antares ultrasound system.

Siemens said it substantially increased its echocardiography market share since the acquisition of Acuson in 2000. In the KBC report, Siemens' echocardiography revenues showed an increase of 42 percent over the respective data in the 2000 KBC report.
