Bruce Tromberg appointed director of NIBIB

Bruce J. Tromberg, PhD, was appointed Director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) on Monday, Jan. 7 at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, according to a recent NIBIB news release.

A leading researcher in the field of biophotonics, Tromberg brings more than 30 years of academic and scientific expertise to the NIBIB. He was previously a professor in the departments of biomedical engineering and surgery the University of California at Irvine (UCI) and was also director of UCI’s Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic.

Tromberg's research spans across biophotonics and biomedical optics—two rapidly growing fields that use light to image and conduct therapy at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels, according to the release.

He also specializes in new technology development as well as the “bench to bedside” clinical translation, validation and commercialization of treatment methods, and has served as the principal investigator for multiple National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants over the past two decades.

Tromberg supersedes Roderic I. Pettigrew, PhD, MD, who stepped down as NIBIB director last November since his appointment in 2002.
