University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center names new radiology chair

One of northern Ohio’s largest healthcare institutions has named a new chair of its department of radiology.

Donna M. Plecha, MD, has been chosen to lead University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center’s radiology department. The Cleveland, Ohio- based institution is considered University Hospital’s flagship academic medical center.

“Dr. Plecha has demonstrated extraordinary leadership capabilities while serving as interim co-chair for the past year,” Daniel Simon, MD, president of UH Medical Centers, said in the announcement. “We are confident that she will continue to enhance the reputation of our radiology department as one of the leading departments of its kind in the nation.”

Plecha has been with University Hospitals since 1993 and is currently a professor of radiology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, which is affiliated with the Cleveland-based medical center.

She is a nationally recognized expert in breast imaging and helps determine screening guidelines as a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis Panel. Plecha has received numerous awards and honors including UH Cleveland Medical Center Radiologist of the Year, Cleveland Magazine’s Best Doctors in Cleveland and Newsweek Magazine’s Top Cancer Doctors.

“She was instrumental in bringing digital breast tomosynthesis to Northeast Ohio and is highly respected by her peers here and across the nation,” Simon added. “She is an excellent choice to lead us into the future.”
