UK radiologist shortage forces stroke patients to seek treatment abroad

While medical students in Scotland are struggling to be admitted into radiology programs, the United Kingdom's radiologist shortage is leading to stroke patients looking elsewhere for treatment, according to a report published September 21 by The Times U.K.

The Royal College of Radiologists in Scotland said it needs to hire at least another 25 radiologist trainees each year to fulfill vacancies that are having patients be denied care, especially stroke patients.

“This is despite there being so many vacancies that stroke patients are unable to receive an emergency procedure from specially trained radiologists that can significantly reduce the chance of living with disabilities,” according to The Times.

Additionally, for every radiologist trainee job, three to four applicants are rejected. NHS Highland also reported that the radiologist shortage has forced thousands of patients to seek treatment outside the country from other health providers.
