Five radiology groups and departments were awarded trophies at RSNA 2019 in Chicago last week for combining creative thinking with coordinated teamwork to develop an original breakthrough in medical imaging.
The event was Radiology Business Journal’s second annual Imaging Innovation Awards presentation.
The competition was sponsored and supported by Intelerad, which hosted the awards ceremony at its booth.
“We received 26 completed entries, up from 17 the previous year,” Dave Pearson, editor of RBJ, said before presenting the awards. “That’s not a small number when you consider the entry form takes an hour or longer to complete.”
Pearson added that the five winners “never lost sight of the ultimate point of all their extra effort: improving patient care while increasing efficiencies and, wherever possible, cutting or at least containing costs."
In no special order, here are the winners and their project names:
- Department of Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania: Reduction of Unnecessary Gadolinium-Based Contrast in Multiple Sclerosis Patients
- Integrated Imaging Consultants: Standardization of Clinical Imaging Through Novel Multi-Council Development Within a Large Integrated Healthcare System
- Radiology Group of Abington: Process Improvement for Follow-up Radiology Report Recommendations of Lung Nodules
- Radiology Partners: RecoMD
- UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and Parkland Health & Hospital System: An Initiative to Power Clinical Decision Support with Structured Reporting of Positive Ultrasound Exams for Deep Vein Thrombosis
Commenting on the results after the ceremony, Pearson said the judging process proved challenging due to the size of the field and the quality of the entries.
“Nearly every entry was genuinely impressive and worthwhile,” he said. “Not everyone can win, but we’re confident the cream rose to the top—and we think RBJ readers will agree when they read the winning entries.”
