A police investigation is ongoing after officials found a computer and external hard drive used to store retinal images were stolen from the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah.
According to the June 2 news release from the University, 607 patients were affected.
“We promptly notified police and began investigating the incident. The stolen Moran equipment contained information related to retinal imaging conducted by U of U Health specialists evaluating patients at University of Utah Hospital and Primary Children’s Hospital,” the release read.
The devices contained retinal images, full or partial names, date of birth and medical reference numbers used to identify records within the health system’s medical record system. All imaging on the devices was conducted between July 1, 2014, and March 30, 2018, according to the release.
No patient social security information or financial information was involved in the breach. Officials said they have no reason to believe any of the stolen information has been misused.
“Protecting the confidentiality of our patients’ information is a core value for us,” the news release read. “Please accept our apologies as we sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern caused by this event. U of U Health is implementing corrective measures and enhancing security in an effort to reduce the risk of an event like this occurring again.”
