UK woman sentenced to prison after scan revealed she lied about brain cancer

A U.K. woman created messages from a fake doctor to convince people she had brain cancer in an effort to steal money designated for her supposed treatment costs.

Jasmin Mistry, 36, was sentenced to four years in jail on Friday, Dec. 14, after a brain scan, which she claimed was her own, was discovered to had been taken from Google.

"Mistry went to extreme lengths to manipulate those closest to her emotionally and financially to defraud her now former husband and his family out of a large sum of money,” said Detective Con Jon Bounds in a BBC News story.

Mistry initially told her husband of her cancer diagnosis in 2013, showing him messages she had created using a separate SIIM card. Those messages claimed she had six months to live, which led to £253,122 ($319,012) in donations for treatment from her family and friends.

She was arrested in November 2017, and police said the scan had tumors so debilitating it would have been fatal for whomever the scan belonged to, according to BBC.
