Varian expands services at Scotland cancer center
Varian Medical Systems is outfitting the expansion of The West of Scotland Cancer Center's (Glasgow) radiotherapy unit with new Clinac medical linear accelerators for cancer treatments along with upgrades for existing accelerators and specialized software for treatment planning and management of patient records and clinical data. The center is also ordering Varian's new On-Board Imager accessory for delivering image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) by tracking tumor positions via x-ray at the moment of treatment.

When completed, the new cancer center, currently being constructed on the site of the Gartnavel General Hospital, will house one of the biggest radiotherapy units in Europe, said Varian. The five-story West of Scotland Cancer Centre treats 60 percent of the Scottish population, seeing approximately 6,000 new patients annually.

According to Varian, the West of Scotland Cancer Centre is initially purchasing three Varian Clinac accelerators and upgrading the existing Clinacs in its Beatson Oncology Centre.
