Has overuse of mammography created an epidemic of breast cancer pseudo-survivorship? That was the provocative question asked in a recent editorial published by Forbes.
Written by Peter Ubel, MD, physician and behavioral scientist at Duke University who focuses on medical controversies and bioethics, the editorial is a follow-up to the recent JAMA Oncology study that found patients with ductal carcinoma in situ who were aggressively treated with radiotherapy or mastectomy did not see lower breast cancer mortality rates.
Ubel underscored his point by relaying the story of a woman who underwent a botched wire biopsy that lasted more than two hours and resulted in significant pain.
