ASRT Foundation Awards Nearly $250,000 in Scholarships to Radiologic Science Professionals and Students

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The ASRT Foundation has announced the recipients of its entry-level and professional scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year.

“The ASRT Foundation is excited to be providing almost $250,000 in scholarships for 71 deserving radiologic science professionals and students this year – the most in our history,” said Phelosha Collaros, ASRT Foundation’s director. “This is an important milestone that demonstrates the radiologic science community’s commitment to the profession. Because of strong support from donors and corporate sponsors, more R.T.s are now getting access to the education and resources they need to be successful in the workplace.”

The Foundation’s entry-level scholarship program provides financial support for outstanding students working to complete a radiologic technology or radiation therapy educational program. This year’s entry-level scholarship recipients are:

Elekta Radiation Therapy Scholarship, $5,000 each

This scholarship is made possible by a generous grant from Elekta.

  • Christopher Alley of Bloomington, Ind., enrolled in an associate degree program at Ivy Tech Community College.
  • Jessica Culbertson of Austin, Texas, enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at Texas State University at San Marcos.
  • Mark Fowler of Warren, Mich., enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at Baker College of Jackson.
  • Nhi H. Vu of Plano, Texas, enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. 

Jerman-Cahoon Student Scholarship, $2,500 each

This scholarship was created in honor of Edward Jerman and John Cahoon and is made possible by support from ASRT Foundation Patrons and a generous grant from the ASRT.

  • Janelle Davies of Cashmere, Wash., enrolled in a certificate program at Wenatchee Valley College.
  • George Hutti of La Mesa, Calif., enrolled in an associate degree program at San Diego Mesa College. 
  • Stephen Nash of San Antonio enrolled in an associate degree program at Baptist School of Health Professionals.
  • Courtney Rausch of Chilton, Wis., enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at Marian University-Wisconsin.
  • Samuel Taylor of Windermere, Fla., enrolled in a certificate program at Lakeland Regional Medical Center School of Radiology. 

Royce Osborn Minority Student Scholarship, $4,000 each

This scholarship is made possible by a generous grant from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and donations from our Patrons.

  • Rosa Crivelli-Medina of Cypress, Calif., enrolled in an associate degree program at Long Beach City College.
  • Joleen Evans of Tualatin, Ore., enrolled in an associate degree program at Portland Community College.
  • Kawsar Khan of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., enrolled in a certificate program at Shore Medical Center School of Radiologic Technology.
  • Amanda Mullen of Muskogee, Okla., enrolled in an associate degree program at Indian Capital Technology Center-Muskogee.
  • Gideon Tameru of San Jose, Calif., enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at Kaiser School of Allied Health Sciences. 

The professional scholarship program helps radiologic science professionals meet financial obligations to return to school for completion of a degree or to obtain additional certification. This year’s professional scholarship recipients are:

Medical Imaging Educators Scholarship, $5,000 each

This scholarship is made possible by donations to the ASRT Foundation.

  • Traci Fox of Bensalem, Pa., enrolled in a doctoral degree program at Drexel University.
  • Michael Hartman of Port Washington, N.Y., enrolled in a doctoral degree program at Long Island University-C.W. Post Campus.
  • Chad Hunley of Clarksville, Tenn., enrolled in a master’s degree program at Walden University.
  • Ronald Walker of Findlay, Ohio, enrolled in a doctoral degree program at Northcentral University. 

Professional Advancement Scholarship, $2,000 each

This scholarship is made possible by a generous grant from ASRT’s JobBank® partner, HEALTHeCAREERS.

  • Victoria Barnosky of Pittsburgh enrolled in a doctoral degree program at Robert Morris University.
  • Dale Collins of Eagle River, Ark., enrolled in a doctoral degree program at Northcentral University.

  • Elizabeth Price of Columbus, N.J., enrolled in a doctoral degree program at Wilmington University.

Parsons Degree Achievement Scholarship, $2,000 each

Named in memory of former ASRT Foundation Chairman Cathy Parsons, this scholarship is made possible by donations to the ASRT Foundation and a generous grant from the ASRT.

This scholarship was created in honor of Eileen McCullough and is made possible by a generous grant from Varian Medical Systems.

  • Andrew Rieck of Mohnton, Pa., enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at Thomas Jefferson University.
  • Kyle Riffle of Gahanna, Ohio, enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at The Ohio State University-Main Campus.
  • Marcus Robinson of Arlington, Va., enrolled in a master’s degree program at George Washington University.
  • Katie Simmons Copeland of Meridian, Miss., enrolled in a master’s degree program at Louisiana State University-Shreveport. 

Scholarship recipients submitted applications and were selected based on evidence of commitment, leadership, achievement and financial need. The Foundation’s Scholarship Review Committee evaluated scholarship applications and provided recommendations to the Board of Trustees. Recipients were then approved by the Board of Trustees.
