Bill aims for insurance to cover 3D mammograms

A bill in Texas is gaining attention, as it would require all commercial insurance providers in Texas, to cover 3D mammography for breast cancer screening.

According to the KBTX-TV article, 3D breast exams are quickly becoming the standard. 3D mammography provides patients with better chances for early detection and is beneficial for patients with dense breasts.

Although there has been an increase with hospital and medical centers across the state offering this test, many women still have to pay out of pocket for the screening. Harris County Representative Senfronia Thompson is behind the bill and is fighting for the idea that digital breast tomosynthesis technology is no longer investigational.

House Bill 1036 was brought to the table in January 2017 and has since been assigned to the state House's health committee for review.
