HIPAA rules likely to extend to PHRs
The National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics issued a draft report of recommendations that calls for HIPAA privacy protections to be applied to personal health records (PHRs). The report calls on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to create policies to prevent mix-ups such as patients being matched up with incorrect records and to allow patients and physicians to have some control over which types of information are transmitted via health networks. The final report will be submitted for approval by the end of October.
