Telehealth

Also known as telemedicine, this area of care helps connect doctors and patients remotely, without requiring in-person visits. This virtual care strategy is beneficial for managing chronic conditions, delivering lab test or diagnostic imaging results, post-surgical follow-ups, assessing skin conditions, online counseling and many other healthcare services. It also can improve care, care access and outcomes for patients.

Amy Thompson, Signify Research, explains key observations in the teleradiology market at RSNA 2023, including the in creasing use of cloud and AI.

Cloud and AI are key to teleradiology success in post-COVID resurgence, expert says

Increasing use of cloud and AI are among the trends observed by Amy Thompson, research manager for healthcare IT at the healthcare market analysis firm Signify Research, at RSNA 2023.

X-ray results suggest telehealth may be a bad fit for treating musculoskeletal conditions

Musculoskeletal X-rays ordered during telemedicine appointments had a higher likelihood of showing "normal" results than those ordered during in-person visits, suggesting those exams may have not been necessary in the first place.

The Nanox ARC cold-cathode, tomosynthesis 3D X-ray system is currently pending FDA clearance. If cleared, it would be the first device of its kind to offer cold-cathode X-ray tube technology and the ability to slice through the anatomy in images similar to CT scans to aid diagnosis. The new type of tube also could greatly reduce the size and weight of X-ray systems. The vendor sees this system as key to its larger plan to address health disparities and access to imaging world-wide. #Nanox

Can cold-cathode X-ray combined with teleradiology and AI eliminate health disparities?

The Israeli vendor Nanox says it has a vision for the future of healthcare. It seeks to address health disparities and access challenges with a new business model and innovative package of technologies. Hurdles loom, but opportunities abound.

Telestroke Networks Make a Mark

Two million neurons die per every minute that a stroke goes untreated, making rapid diagnosis and treatment crucial for the best outcomes. However, 45 percent of Americans live more than 60 minutes away from a primary stroke center. Enter telemedicine: telestroke networks have sprung up across the U.S., and are rapidly expanding, delivering revenue gains and improving patient outcomes.

Automated AI-generated measurements combined with annotated CT images can improve treatment planning and help referring physicians and patients better understand their disease, explained Sarah Jane Rinehart, MD, director of cardiac imaging with Charleston Area Medical Center.

Two advanced algorithms—one for CAC scores and another for segmenting cardiac chamber volumes—outperformed radiologists when assessing low-dose chest CT scans.

"Gen AI can help tackle repetitive tasks and provide insights into massive datasets, saving valuable time," Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said Tuesday.
