First Coast Oncology offers AccuBoost breast cancer radiotherapy
First Coast Oncology will install AccuBoost’s breast cancer radiotherapy system in its Mandarin office and anticipates that the first patient will be treated in early November.

The system is designed to treat breast cancer and is an image-guided radiation therapy technique that uses high-dose radiation brachytherapy to deliver a focused dose to the lumpectomy site, according to Scot Ackerman, MD, medical director of First Coast.

Following a lumpectomy, most women undergo whole breast irradiation, which includes a boost phase. The patient's breast is immobilized and then imaged in real time to locate the lumpectomy cavity and determine the size and position of the applicator to be used for delivering the radiation, the Billerica, Mass.-based company said.
