McKesson sees 100th installation of surgical manager
McKesson Corp. announced the completion of the 100th installation of Horizon Surgical Manager, which features comprehensive surgical scheduling and documentation abilities designed to improve on-time case starts, improve operating room (OR) capacity and help assure patient safety. Horizon Surgical Manager is used for more than 10 million procedures in 12,000 surgical suites nationwide, according to McKesson.
   
St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., is one highlighted institution that has installed the surgical manager. The hospital is reported to have increased its cases from 60 to 80/day with resulting savings of $21 million in revenue over three years. Also, the manager assisted the hospital to identify over $150,000 in inventory that was unnecessary.
    
Key functionality includes OR inventory management; anesthesia and clinical documentation; patient billing and decision support including statistical analysis and business intelligence dashboards; and a clinical documentation (i.e., perioperative charting) component that includes the Perioperative Nursing Data Set (PNDS) that was developed in conjunction with the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN).
