Siemens highlights breast imaging technologies
Siemens Healthcare showcased its Magnetom Espree–Pink, Mammomat Novation and mammography tomosynthesis at the 2008 RSNA conference in Chicago.

The company said its Magnetom Espree–Pink combines the 70cm Open-Bore design of the Magnetom Espree for patient comfort with the Sentinelle Vanguard solution for high quality imaging and biopsy access. The MR system offers a portfolio of routine and advanced applications for breast care, including syngo Views, the Breast Suite to address the needs of routine breast imaging. Additionally Magnetom Espree-Pink offers advanced applications like syngo Grace spectroscopy for acquiring information on the biochemical status of a lesion or the Siemens syngo Blade for motion-free imaging results. The system is an 18-channel system and upgradeable to a fully equipped Magnetom Espree, powered by Tim, with whole-body diagnostic capabilities.

Mammomat Novation, a full-field digital mammography system for screening, diagnostics, and biopsy applications, is designed to handle the mammography workup from patient registration and image acquisition to post-processing and reading, according to the company. With Siemens’ dual anode technology, the system examines even dense breasts with shorter exposure times and reduced dose. Mammomat Novation is equipped with a large format detector size (24 cm x 29 cm) for imaging most breast sizes. The system allows the integration of Opdima digital spot imaging and digital biopsy system.

Siemens also highlighted the latest technology under development in full-field mammography, breast tomosynthesis. The 3D imaging technology acquires 2D projection images of a compressed breast at multiple angles during a sweep of the x-ray tube. The system is limited to investigational use and not commercially available in the United States.
