Mobile prostate cancer screening unit hits the streets of NYC

A new mobile prostate cancer screening unit has just been launched by Mount Sinai Health in New York City.

Also known as the Mount Sinai Robert F. Smith Mobile Prostate Cancer Screening Unit, the vehicle was developed with the intention of increasing access to screening and supporting prostate health in the Black community, which has a disproportionately high incidence of prostate cancer compared to white men. The van is equipped to complete several screening mechanisms, including prostate-specific antigen tests, digital rectal exams, ultrasound and genomics testing.

“The Robert F. Smith Mobile Prostate Cancer Screening Unit will be an invaluable service for the community, allowing us to meet our patients where they are,” Ash Tewari, MBBS, Chair of Urology at the Mount Sinai Health System and leader of the mobile initiative, said in a statement. “Our goal is that with increased education, awareness, and access to testing, we can help detect prostate cancer early, save lives, and close the gaps in high-risk diagnostic and fatality rates.”

With the help of community health partners, the Mount Sinai Health System intends to raise awareness about prostate cancer and the screening capabilities of the mobile unit in Black neighborhoods throughout New York City. Additionally, they are assisting in setting up prostate cancer screening appointments and scheduling follow-ups with urologists as needed.

The mobile unit comes as the result of a $3.8 million donation from philanthropist Robert F. Smith, chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners.

“With Black men at an increased risk of both being diagnosed with and dying from prostate cancer, getting these life-saving resources for testing and treatment into our communities has never been more urgent,” Smith said in a statement. “I am proud to support Mount Sinai in these efforts to ensure we do not continue to lose far too many husbands, fathers, uncles, brothers, sons, and friends to this disease. This mobile screening unit will bring awareness and care right into the communities where they are most needed.”

The unit is set to begin visiting communities in New York City on May 14. Community events can be scheduled by calling 646-531-8092 or emailing prostatecancer@mountsinai.org. For more information, visit https://www.mountsinai.org/care/cancer/services/prostate/mobile-screening.
