Womens Imaging

Women’s imaging encompasses many radiology procedures related to women and the diseases that are most prevalent to women such as breast cancer or gynecological issues. Mammogram, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and breast biopsy are the most commonly used procedures.

When lumps turn up between screenings, targeted sonography makes repeat mammography unnecessary

Breast lumps found between scheduled screening mammograms are better evaluated with targeted ultrasound than with repeat mammography, as the latter doesn’t add value beyond the former and so may only increase expense as well as radiation exposure.

Comparing mammograms with multiple priors yields better detection, fewer recalls

Radiologists who compare new screening-mammography findings with those from two or more of the patient’s prior exams can expect better interpretive performance than radiologists who compare the new findings with those from only one prior exam.

Nonstandard patient positioning shows promise in intraoperative breast MRI

Intraoperative MRI for breast-tumor resection following presurgical MRI with the patient in the supine (“face up”) position can be used to effectively plan the extent of resection, detect residual tumor immediately after the first attempt at definitive lumpectomy and provide feedback to the surgeon within the surgical suite during a breast-conserving operation.

Around the web

Automated AI-generated measurements combined with annotated CT images can improve treatment planning and help referring physicians and patients better understand their disease, explained Sarah Jane Rinehart, MD, director of cardiac imaging with Charleston Area Medical Center.

Two advanced algorithms—one for CAC scores and another for segmenting cardiac chamber volumes—outperformed radiologists when assessing low-dose chest CT scans.

"Gen AI can help tackle repetitive tasks and provide insights into massive datasets, saving valuable time," Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said Tuesday.
